There is no shared expiration clock

A newspaper article can remain online for as long as the publisher chooses to maintain it. Some publications preserve extensive archives, while others migrate, restrict or retire old pages. The age of a story does not itself determine whether a search engine can show it. Waiting a fixed number of years is not a reliable reputation strategy.

Access and indexing are different

A paywall may limit what a visitor can read without eliminating the page’s title or presence in search. A changed URL can redirect to an archive. Conversely, a page that is gone from its original location may still have copies elsewhere. Inspect the current destination rather than relying on an old bookmark or a single search screenshot.

Why older reporting can remain prominent

An article may be closely relevant to a name query, while the subject has little current information online. The publication may also have a strong established presence. These are reasons to examine the wider information landscape, not evidence that anyone can promise to outrank the article with a prescribed number of new posts.

When circumstances change

A later resolution, correction or other material development may justify asking the publisher to add context. Keep the request specific and supported. Explain how the additional information helps readers understand the story. A publisher may choose an update instead of deletion, or may decline under its editorial policy.

What to do with a stale search description

If the source has actually changed but the result still describes the previous content, review the search engine’s outdated-content process. This route concerns the mismatch between source and search representation. It is not a process for erasing a live article solely because its publication date is old.

A useful review checklist

Record the original URL, any redirect, present accessibility, current article text and search-result description. Note whether copies exist and whether you have already contacted the publication. Then decide between a correction request, an eligible removal review and a broader visibility plan. This produces a more useful conversation than asking for an arbitrary removal deadline.
